VGChartz.com reports that Nintendo's wonder console is about to squash a new record, being the first console that reaches an install base of 20 million before the "two-years-on-the-market" period.
It took PlayStation 2 more than 5 years (5 years and 9 months, to be exact) to reach 100 million owners, but Wii is much faster in this race. A simple calculus shows that in approximately 2100 days- the period between March 4, 2000 (when PS2 was launched) and November 19, 2005 (when the console reached an install base of 100 million)- an average of about 47,600 PS2s were sold every single day.
Compare that to Wii's phenomenal performance: since November 19, 2006 the cheap gadget sold more than 19.94 million units, which means that in roughly 390 days an average of 51,100 units were sold each day. If customers' demand remains at the same level, Nintendo is on track of achieving the "100 million-consoles-sold" landmark by the end of 2010 or by early 2011 (which is still a few months less than PlayStation 2).
That is if Nintendo manages to cope with the overwhelming demand, which I don't personally see happening unless they build some new manufacturing facilities soon. And since they haven't announced anything in this domain lately...
