Last year has been "the year of the shooter" if we are to paraphrase the Chinese calendar. Titles like Halo 3, COD4, Crysis, Jericho, TimeShift, Uncharted Drake's Fortune or the multi-awarded and highly-praised BioShock have all but destroyed our spare time and romantic relationships. What are we to play this year then?
Well, excluding the jaw-dropping innovations from LittleBigPlanet or the imminent arrival of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2, plus the irradiations in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky and Fallout 3, we're left with a lot of MMOs. At least 14 of them are ready to stress our Internet connection to the max, so here they are:
Requiem: Bloodymare (produced by Gravity Interactive and powered by the Havok physics engine, the new MMORPG will debut early this year in the US only and will try to steer you away from the sunny lands of Azeroth to the dark, mysterious and nightmares-infested land of Ethegia)
2Moons (a free to play and extremely violent MMORPG from Aklaim Studios, already launched so... go create an account!)
Age of Armor: 1Q 2008
The Chronicles of Spellborn: (currently in development at Spellborn NV, this Unreal Engine 3-powered MMORPG is scheduled to debut in Q1 2008)
World of Kung Fu: (a free to play 3D MMORPG for the PC. Based on traditional Chinese culture, the game takes place in a mythical land founded on the ancient Kung Fu moral values of justice and heroism. Release date: 1Q 2008)
Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures: (initially programmed for March 25, this highly-anticipated MMORPG got delayed until May 20, for further polishing)
Godswar Online: 2Q 2008
Warhammer Online: (another MMO ready to take off this year, probably sometimes in June. Published by Electronic Arts and currently in development at EA's Mythic studios, the game had registered more than 500,000 beta-testers by December 13, 2007)
Wonderland Online: 2Q 2008
Zu Online: Q2 2008
Stargate Worlds: 4Q 2008
AION The Tower of Eternity: 2008
Huxley: (this time wer're talking about a MMOFPS, which means that you'll be fragging each other out in DOOM or UT-style, but with a helluva lot more companions. The game will probably ship in Q4 2008)
Tales of Pirates: 2008
The Pirates of the Burning Sea: (launched on January 22, 2008 after more than 6 years of development at Flying Lab Software.
