Although people, and especially parents and non-gamers, think that playing violent video games will harm your spirit, a recent study is to prove that all those worries are senseless. This issue of violent video gaming is similar to the one of watching violent movies at TV. The studies that have been made since the 70s till present haven’t been able to find the correct answer, whether watching violent, bloody movie could really influence (in a negative way) your daily behavior. However, the two major theories related to the violent movies issue have been that of catharsis and that of imitation. These theories could really be applied to video gaming too. The recent study that has been made on about 1,200 seventh and eighth graders who play games regularly seems to say that the theory of catharsis is right. The researchers have said that the most boys, aged 12-14 years old, are helped by these games to deal with their emotions, such as stress and anger. Although the researchers have said that whether getting anger out through video gaming is a good or a bad thing is not their business to judge, they have shared their opinion: for a lot of children getting their anger out would be a good thing. On the other hand, the researchers have noticed that playing video games is a social activity too. However, they have also drawn the parents’ attention to continually be aware of the games their children play and to limit their use by keeping the game consoles and PCs out their bedrooms.
