The Xbox 360 demo for the most expected dino-shooter of early 2008 is out now on Xbox Live, and it packs more than 1.7Gb of textures, code and...dinosaurs, of course.
Propaganda Games' first person shooter, set up in lush, green environments optimized for dino-breeding, debuts with the hero surviving a space attack that eradicates most of his team and throws him on a planet crawling with pre-historic monstrosities. The objective is to find a way out of a dank cave, which is a bit easier to stomach with an inventory consisting of a bow, a knife and two machine guns.
The most impressive thing in the demo is the tropical, Crysis-like jungle that surrounds you and offers you a perfect hide-out, either protecting you from dinosaurs or from human enemies. And yes, it does look great on the Xbox 360, but to be honest we're more excited about seeing this rendered on a high-end PC, because of higher resolutions.
"Pushing scale in the environments was helpful in creating a feeling of fear and vulnerability at times. Not only did we want the dinosaurs to be huge and menacing, but the environment as well with towering trees and plants shadowing over you. Having very large scaled environment assets can be a slippery slope if you’re not careful. We had to be very mindful of using other surrounding art to reinforce the sense of scale and not come off as making the player and dinosaurs look like miniatures. Placing small detailed objects next to huge trees helped to keep real world scale in check," said Jason Buchwitz, Lead Environment Artist for Turok.
We won't spoil your fun with more details, but we're just going to tell you that Turok 3 is powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3 and that you should get your piggybanks ready for slaughter on February 5, 2008. The PC version will arrive in spring.
