A Duke Nukem game, this year? Apparently so. But it’s not Duke Nukem Forever – far from it. It’s strange how things work out in life, especially gaming life – to have waited so long for the next Duke Nukem and to get some sand thrown in your eyes. Or maybe it’s more than that.
Duke Nukem Forever has been a holy quest of the gaming realm since the days of the last millennium, when Duke Nukem had a mighty 3D in its name-wake and ravaged our primitive monitors. From time to time, when some indicator on their hype-screen started glowing red, 3D Realms deigned releasing some teaser, but nothing we could actually hold onto.
Gamerush.nl (via n4g.com) points out that “a releaselist of a major distributor” has the name Duke Nukem in it. But wait, it’s only for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. [enter swear word here] We’ve really got nothing against portable gaming machines, but it’s just that most of us expected a major release first, for PC, PS3. Xbox 360, Wii… At least the new game is specified to be a first-person shooter.
Even this rather disappointing news should be taken with a grain of salt. First of all, nothing is official yet, but the said distributor is known for previous information leaks like this one, and they happened to be true.
But the “unsureness” of this new Duke Nukem game doesn’t stop here. Because we may actually be dealing with the old Duke Nukem 3D, some sort of remake and adaptation for the DS and PSP. 3D Realms had actually mentioned the fact they were interested in bringing this 20th century game to the Xbox 360 arcade. Phhht!
Sometimes, I wish games were mammals, so they could give birth to sequels naturally, without the intervention of some office-polishers and heads of departments who don’t even play video games for at least 20 hours a week, like a normal human being does.
