The U.S. Nintendo Power magazine reports that several Commodore 64 games could find themselves in the honorable (we'll see just how honorable) position of being emulated on the Wii’s virtual console. In case you haven't found yet some valid explanations, "Virtual Console" represents a new video game download service, courtesy of Nintendo, made available for all users of its gaming system.
For the time being, there are no specific named titles, but only vague indications that some of them are coming from the U.S. developer Epyx, now a defunct company, that went bankrupt back in 1989, when its assets were subsequently obtained by British developer System 3, aka Studio 3. Epyx is well-known for their work on the 8-bit Commodore 64 home computer, the design for the prototype Lynx console, and of course several games like Impossible Mission and California series. Well, after it got hold onto those assets, System 3 also grew to become one of the most respected Commodore 64 developers in Europe, giving birth to classics such as The Last Ninja, Myth, International Karate, aka World Karate Championship, IK+ and Putty.
The current System 3's plans are the release of Gottlieb Pinball Classics and retro golf license Leaderboard for the Wii, and also speculation regarding some reworkings of Impossible Mission and California Games. Unfortunately, so far there is no official indication that Virtual Console will get its hands on some of the System 3's earlier titles.
