Game News - The Necromancer class is dead and buried in Diablo III

So, are you a little bit sad to know that the Necromancer class will be missing from Diablo III? Well, here’s Jay Wilson, Diablo III lead designer, trying to cheer you up.

First of all, he says (on MTV Multiplayer), that Diablo III wasn’t meant as a Diablo II with better graphics. And, as befits a title which must stand on its own, the game must bring out its own new, original stuff; that cannot happen if all classes from previous games are simply imported. Their skills imposed a certain type of gameplay and, if you don’t want to play Diablo III the way you played the II, then you have to let go, even if that means waving goodbye to the crowd’s favorite, the Necromancer.

Still, Wilson comforts us by telling us a bit about the Witch Doctor, the class that took the Necromancer’s place. They may be somewhat related, but you won’t be able to rely so much on summoned pets and undead, even if curses remain at your disposal. If we understood it right, the Witch Doctor goes with a faster and more direct fighting style.

If you’re still moaning the loss of the Necromancer, take heed to Jay Wilson’s words: “There’s a lot of people on our team who aren’t happy with our class choices. But after we’ve established ‘Diablo III’ as its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking at old classes. We are trying to design [the Witch Doctor] class so that if we did bring back the Necromancer, there’s room for him. We’re looking out ahead of time at what our expansions are going to be, so we’ve got to keep room open for some of those other classes down the road.”

So take heart, play the Necromancer on Diablo II if you’re still not bored with him and prepare for the leap ahead which will come with Diablo III.
