CNNMoney.com's Game Over column reports indicate that Sony could finally lower the price of the PSP to $149 for the holiday buying season, according to predictions from industry financial analysts. The PSP could also get a boost in sales due to the release of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories this fall and an upcoming online service which will allow the PSP to pay, download and play classic PS1 games.
P.J.McNealy of American Technology Research said:
"There is a price cut coming in the second half of the year. The PSP has lost momentum. Nintendo has had a great run since it launched the DS Lite and Sony needs to regain some ground."
He expects the Sony Charts to drop the PSP's price by $50 to $149, as the moment seems right for a PSP price cut. When the system first went on sale in early 2005, it was available exclusive as a $250 bundle, which included headphones, a carrying case and other accessories. This March, the company is selling just the system for $199, although the numbers indicate that they sold 20 million units shipped worldwide (over 8 million in U.S.), being on par with the Nintendo DS with his over 21 million units sold.
Sony's PlayStation 2 price seems to remain unchanged for now, and the analysts say that an eventual price cut to $99 is certainly not coming until next year.
Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets said:
"PS2 sales are still pretty solid, so why would Sony bother cutting their prices if the flow through retail is still pretty good? Also, Sony still talks about a 10-year life cycle for the PS2. They've typically been doling out these price cuts every couple of years and they lowered prices earlier this spring."
