Sony Corp. has decided to get its PlayStation Portable a little bit more fit for the gamers’ preferences. At the Portable’s fans’ demands and for better compete against Nintendo Co.’s DS, Sony has announced to release in September a slimmer model of PlayStation Portable. Although the both companies released their products at the same time, in late 2004, Sony’s PlayStation Portable handheld game player has been recently outsold by Nintendo’s DS. That is why Sony has decided to enter the battle against Nintendo’s DS with the enemy’s weapons. The new PlayStation Portable will be 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than the current model. Nintendo has recently become a real threat for Sony, for its products and for the company’s reputation itself. DS sold 23.6 million units in the year ended March 2007, while PlayStation Portable sold only 8.4 million. Nintendo’s Wii is the top-selling video game console, while PlayStation 3 is on the third place in top. And most of all, Nintendo has bumped Sony off the list of Japan’s 10 most valuable companies. So it was about time for Sony to start pushing back Nintendo, or at least try to. Making PSP more fit for the gamers’ tastes, cutting in PlayStation 3’s price are just some of the recent strategies that Sony is to put into action.
