As promised, Sony finally brought Skype onto its craved handheld but there's a slight problem: the installation procedure is quite complicated.
Announced at this year's CES, Skype's arrival onto the PSP platform is one of the major additions in the recent period for Sony's portable console. However, while everybody was expecting the application to be included in the latest firmware update (version 3.90), it looks like you'll have to load it yourselves.
Apparently there were some copyright and patent-related issues that prevented this from happening, since Skype has its own proprietary code. Anyway, in order to have it installed onto your PSP 2000 you need to download firmware version 3.90, then you need to...spot a Wi-Fi spot and connect to it.
After these manoeuvres you need to attach a PSP Headset and the Remote Control from the PSP-2000 Headphones to the system, and insert a Memory Stick Duo to save the Skype application software. A nice surprise is the fact that you can create your Skype account on the portable console, even if you have never accessed the application on the PC before. If you already have a Skype account, you can simply enter your username/password.
As usual, calls made through the Internet infrastructure are costless, but you'll have to buy Skype credit to call landlines or mobiles with your PSP.For those of you wondering why only PSP 2000-owners get to feast on free calls, read here.
