The F.E.A.R. and TimeShift publisher announced yesterday that the highly-praised RTS game World in Conflict will be ported onto PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
World in Conflict is a real-time strategy with a plot that takes place in an alternative history, where the Soviets have invaded Western Europe and even the US. The game received numerous awards, including "Best Strategy Game" award at E3 2007, countless "Editor’s Choice" awards from the world’s top reviewers, and was the clear choice for "Best Strategy Game of 2007".
Sierra decided to involve more gamers into the Conflict, by porting the game's code onto next-gen consoles. Originally created for PCs by Sierra's Massive Entertainment studio, World in Conflict will become one of the very few RTS titles out there that have a UI and controls specifically designed for consoles. Besides this, the console version of the game will contain exclusive singe-player and multi-player content, not seen in the PC version. However, the same content will be made available for PCs as an add-on later this year, with more info on the launch date expected soon.
Massive is currently working with Sierra's other Studio, Swordfish, to give console-owners a taste of the war that's ravaging Earth in the parallel history.
"World in Conflict was one of the best games on any platform in 2007 and its innovative action-focused gameplay makes it a perfect fit for the transition to consoles," said Martin Tremblay, president of worldwide studios, Sierra Entertainment. "World in Conflict is being reinvented for Xbox 360 and the PLAYSTATION3 system, with innovative features and new single player and multiplayer content created for the console audience. World in Conflict on consoles will be an amazing extension of an already great gaming franchise."
Previously, the game was known to be a PC-exclusive, with an Xbox 360 version scheduled this spring (actually, Amazon.com says that the Xbox 360 version should arrive on March 31), but apparently it was Sierra's decision to use Sony's platform too for more consistent profits.
