The following announcement is kind of "blurry", but lately don't they all are. According to a press release published in PDF format on the CPL (The Cyberathlete Professional League) website, Tom Mustaine, as in the former Ritual Entertainment studio director and currently Director of Game Development at CPL's new studio, clarified a few things as an early support for the efforts put into creating a new multiplayer game called Severity.
Severity is built on technology created by developer id Software and includes enhanced tournament support, spectator modes, as well as detailed player and tournament statistics tracking. By leveraging the enthusiastic community and practical experiences of the CPL, Severity is uniquely positioned to set new standards while raising the bar for competitive multiplayer games.
For the time being, all we know is that the game is to be released on PC and console systems (probably Xbox 360 and PS3) sometimes in the future, and will focus on team-vs-team and 1vs1 modes, while providing extensive support for live and online competitions. The downside of all this "fuss" is that testing the game is an action scheduled to take place no sooner that late 2007. But it almost seems like a bearable waiting, which shall worth our time. As Tom Mustaine declared:
"Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide."
