J. Allard, the mastermind behind Xbox and corporate vice president at Microsoft, must be a really happy man these days, considering how he managed to solve X60's problems this year and still come out with profits.
Despite the $1.5 billion warranty-extension announced in June to tackle Xbox 360's ever expanding red-ring-of-death plague, the end of last year turned out to be more than satisfying for the Xbox division at Redmond. According to Microsoft's figures, more than 8.1 million copies of Halo 3 have been sold in 2007 (yes, almost 9,000 copies per day...), while the Xbox 360 has reached an install base of more than 17.7 million.
Mass Effect, BioWare's highly-acclaimed RPG for Xbox 360, launched at the end of November, amassed more than 1.6 million owners in less than 6 weeks- a performance not even the most optimistic minds at BioWare were expecting.
As if this wasn't enough, Microsoft boasts with the highest software attach rate (6.9 games per user, according to NPD's November 2007 estimates). Moreover, Xbox 360 is the chicken with the golden eggs, since its owners spend more than anybody else on accessories and software.
