Following Variety.com's report that a deal has been signed to bring the GTA franchise onto the big screen with Eminem in pole-position, Rockstar announced that not only is such deal a pure speculation, but there are currently no plans to have a movie adaptation in the future.
Variety's report indicated last week that Rockstar was close to signing a deal last spring with "one of the six major Hollywood studios" and that "Eminem was quite possibly going to star". In the eve of GTA IV's launch, such news flamed the Web to unimaginable proportions, and brought more free publicity for Rockstar's free-roaming title. Many have speculated that if a movie-adaption of GTA becomes a reality, the movie would be a huge success for both the producers and the owner of the franchise.
However the bubble burst placidly when Dan Houser, vice president of creative at Rockstar, strongly denied the company's involvement in such project and sadistically cut hopes of anything similar in the future. A big-screen GTA is not an option: "Not as far as we are concerned. Some movie producers were trying to put something together to entice us to make a movie, as studios and production teams frequently have done in the past. This proposal was no more interesting than the numerous others we receive. We never entertained proceeding with the project," he said in an e-mail interview with MTV Multiplayer blog.
Moreover, Rockstar has no intention to transform the multi-million seller into a movie hit: "Rockstar was not involved in this project in any way, shape or form. It is not something we are currently interested in."
So I guess there's hope only for 8 Miles II, eh?
