Music and games have always got on quite well together, but until now, they were locked in a conservative, rigid relationship of video-content and soundtrack. Fortunately, titles like Rock Band and Guitar Hero change all that, and the music has actually become the game. So it stands to reason that the tracks of such titles should be the very best or close to it.
As you may or may not know, last week, Def Leppard’s publicist announced that the band will provide songs for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (to be released April 24). The great thing about this was that it was the very first time a musical bigwig "released a new single ahead of its traditional launch through a video game.” According to GameSpot, it’s Motley Crue’s turn this week: their new single will go straight to Rock Band on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
We didn’t invent this stuff, it’s got all the usual PR trappings around it, complete with official statements and all. If you’re really curious about it, leave the Playful site this very second (also posting a negative comment about whatever you wish) and visit the official Rock Band forums. Deep in their bowels, you shall stumble on Harmonix’s announcement that the single called “Saints of Los Angeles” will be downloadable Tuesday on Xbox Live and Thursday on the PlayStation Store (the new one, see our Playful article about firmware update 2.30). And - let trumpets resound – the song will cost you only 80 Microsoft Points of $.99.
And that’s not all. Harmonix hatched other musical schemes as well, and it seems that Rock Band will also feature a classic rock pack with tracks from The Police, Blondie and others. Hmmm, too bad I’m actually a fully-fledged PC RPG geek and I don’t know a thing about consoles. (But I shouldn’t have told you that.)
