One of the best things about the greatest first-person shooters ever made was that tons of mods could be created in their wake; as a matter of fact, the world’s most famous mod, CounterStrike, originated from one such famous game – Half-Life. So should we be sad or worried when Tim Willits from id Software says Rage will be almost unmoddable?
At least that’s is what he said, yesterday, at Austin’s Game Developers Conference. It’s not that id doesn’t want the game to have mods (Willits confesses that he even owes his career to them), but the game might be too technically complex to allow the spawning of such. He also says that Carmack has nothing against mods view and that id will make some efforts to facilitate at least a partial modding of Rage.
It seems an alien race of textures, called "megatextures" , are at the root of all this. Also, they are the reason why the game will look so good. According to Willit’s veiled words, it seems their processing requires a small farm of computers – so it’s no wonder that these monsters are unsuitable for mods.
A compromise solution would be to let modders develop some sort of “modular chunks of gameplay” , as Gamasutra calls them. These things would then be “slotted” into the world of Rage or something like that. By the way, the said world will have a central wasteland-hub and instanced levels. Man, this sounds rather complicated for a FPS – “complicated” in a good way.
