PlayStation 3 fanboys must be really pleased hearing that Sony's massive console has already reached the 10 million units sold landmark, but four months sooner than its rival Xbox 360.
Let's have a short history lesson:
hefty launch price reaching $600 in the US (in New Zealand, Australia or Great Britain the price reached almost $800)lack of good and enticing games that could be considered as system-sellers (something like Halo 3)the "dirty" advertising campaign directed by Microsoft when the PS3 launched in Europe the problems related to the insufficiency of Blu Ray diodes, which have delayed the manufacturing-circuitthe high production costs associated with crafting the Cell CPU, which eventually forced Sony to sell their assets in the the plant that produces it to Toshibathe cancellation of the famous "backwards compatibiltiy" with PS2 games, which infuriated lots of gamers who had pre-ordered the next-gen consolethe lack of a competitive rival for Xbox Livethe difficulties concerning licenses for developing PS3 games (which have eventually been reduced to only $10,000, from the initial $20,000, in order to make the platform more attractive to game-developers)the difficulties related to writing code for the Cell CPU, which until now have led to numerous game-delaysthe press, which has created a negative halo around Sony's gaming rig, accusing the Japanese electronics behemoth of forcing customers to buy a Blu Ray player.the repeated delays that have affected the console's launch and the insufficient stock from November 2006 (only around 400,000 PlayStation 3s have been available at launch, boosting the console's price on e-Bay to more than $1600!)
These would be, in short, the plagues that have affected the biggest (literally) console built until now, but this excludes the $400 million loss registered in fiscal year 2006-2007 at the PlayStation division inside Sony...
However, despite all negative predictions, PlayStation 3 has managed to sell more than 10 million units worldwide, according to VGChartz.com. The amazing thing about this is that the landmark has been reached four month sooner than its rival Xbox 360, even despite having a higher price .
Moreover, David Reeves, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, expects the PlayStation 3 to surpass Xbox 360's install base in PAL areas by the beginning of this summer.
So yeah, Microsoft really needs to come up with a RROD-less console fast, otherwise things are starting to look pretty gloomy for the Big Brother in Redmond...
