OK, with Saint Valentine's love celebration now gone, it is time my fellow Minions to return to our daily routine of wrong-doings and mischievous deeds. Our Overlord is back, with more evil packs.
I must confess that I really enjoyed Overlord, one of the few recent titles that manages to enter the select club of black-humour and irony-stuffed heavy-weights like MediEvil, Duke Nukem or Serious Sam. The tongue-in-cheek approach, the British-tainted humour (Codemasters is the publisher...) and the unbridled exhortations to do (more and more) evil in your path, have all contributed to the memorable time I spent in front of the PC last summer, at least until plasmids started pouring from Rapture...
Well, more than 8 months later and with snow still falling outside my window (oh, how romantic I am...must be that pesky Valentine's Day wine...), the Dutch guys from Triumph Studios have unleashed a new batch of evilness in this world, under the form of three downloadable packs on Xbox Live. All the Minions contained in them are as corrupted as it gets, despite the fact that we're talking about Premium Packs.
Yes, we have a premium pack called Raising Hell and a less-noble pack called Challenge. The first one, costing 800 MS points on XBL ($10), is actually a devilishly good single-player expansion pack, that introduces two new levels: Abyss and Dungeon Challenges. The second one, costing 400 MS points ($5), brings all new multi-player maps and new multi-player modes, including the exciting "Capture the Bride" (now that I'd like to see...) and "Protect your Power". Moreover, a new single-player difficulty level is included in the Challenge pack (called Legendary mode), where "players [have] to achieve Legendary status by using their most aggressive Minion managing skills to complete the single-player game under exceptional bad-ass circumstances."
Last, but not least, there's a free downloadable pack too, but it's quite poor: the Split-screen Multiplayer Pack brings only a new multi-player map, which goes by the name of Rocky Race and where you have to team-up with another Overlord to face a deadly...rock. There's also the possibility to play all the multi-player maps launched by now in split-screen, thanks to this new map.
