Ubisoft just keeps getting bigger and bigger! Their first studio established outside of France in 1992 was the Romanian studio from Bucharest (where Silent Hunter III, King Kong (PC) and Blazing Angels were developed, among others), and now a team from this studio has moved on to set up a new studio in Sofia, Bulgaria. The superior high-tech education in the area will hopefully provide them with the talent pool needed, in order to expand their team with 40 additional employees by the end of 2006.
Currently, Ubisoft Bulgaria houses 21 team members, with a core group of 11 developers (9 engineers and 2 artists) who have already been working at Ubisoft Romania on the production of the Arcade flight-simulator Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, recently released on the Xbox 360. The new studio will be managed by Alexandru-Ion Radu, who in turn will be reporting directly to Sébastien Delen, managing director of Ubisoft Romania.
By now, you're probably asking yourself what kind of game can a team of 11 devs possibly come up with? Well, apparently there's no original IP in the making, if that's what you're thinking. But they are, however, working on two projects already: one of them is the PC version of Rayman Raving Rabbids (developed under the artistic direction of its creator Michel Ancel); and the other one is a console version of CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder (originally by Telltale Games for the PC).
Sure, this may not turn out to be another Ubi Montreal in the making, but it does reaffirm the growing potential of the Eastern Europe block of countries - and game makers.
