Get this. It’s more or less strongly rumored that Microsoft intends to release a Wii-like motion-sensing thingamagick before the end of 2008 AD. This bit of serious gossip came from MTV, who got it from the classic “insider source”. But just to think about the possibility of this being true makes us twitch uncontrollably (for various reasons).
One of these would be that such a move made by Microsoft would shake things up pretty thoroughly in the world of console gamers. You see, it would mean that they’re trying to change their marketing focus from the high end segment to the “casual gaming” type. By high end, I mean “serious” games, more difficult to master and, more importantly, with cutting edge graphics and other high technical performances. Sony’s PS3 was meant exactly for this kind of games, while Nintendo is clearly riding the wave of the easy-going arcade-orientated stuff.
The Xbox 360 was sort of in-between, but tended to get closer to the high-end niche. Unfortunately for many hardcore xbox-ers, Microsoft has lately showed a tendency to bring this console closer to the “casual” style (there is even an Xbox 360 Arcade model). Besides, they seemed to be pushing for games requiring less disk space.
But would this “Microsoft remote”-thing be a threat to Nintendo? Not very likely. The lords of Wii have lots and lots of experience with motion-sensor controllers and with games using them to the fullest. Microsoft would have a lot of catching up to do.
Anyway, there are no definite changes yet, so you may have just lost precious gaming time reading this. (Our deepest apologies).
