What everyone had suspected for a long time has finally been confirmed: BioWare's highly-praised RPG, until recently an Xbox 360-exclusive, will be ported onto PCs.
After traveling though galaxies far-far away in Knights of the Old Republic, PC gamers will get a taste of how it is to save the galaxy from complete annihilation, in BioWare's recently launched RPG Mass Effect.
The former Xbox 360-exclusive came out last year on November 20 and instantly registered a, well... massive success, selling more than 1.6 million copies in less than 6 weeks. On the heels of that success Electronic Arts, BioWare's current owner, decided to risk sending Commander Shepard on a critical PC mission, starting May 20 this year.
Both the publisher and the developer have stated that the PC controls will be optimized and that the graphics will be improved (isn't this what Capcom said last year about Lost Planet? and weren't those controls Xbox-tainted?).
Besides the fully customizable controls and the "biotic" powers that come for the keyboard's many buttons, the exclusive features that will be included in the PC version of Mass Effect refer to a new GUI for the inventory screen and new decryption mini-game.
"Mass Effect serves as a powerful example of video games as an art form, delivering new levels of emotional intensity, realistic characters and a gripping storyline - all set in a compelling new universe," said Ray Muzyka, General Manager, BioWare and Vice President, Electronic Arts. Frank Gibeau, President of EA's Games Label added, "EA has struck an agreement with Microsoft to handle future publishing for Mass Effect. We are looking forward to releasing Mass Effect on the PC this Spring and brand new titles in the future."
Until now, BioWare's RPG has received numerous awards (no less than 70!), including Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year and Role-Playing Game of the Year. The most recent is the Role-Playing Game of the Year at the 11th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, hosted by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
UPDATE: First screenshots from the PC version have already arrived. You can see them here.
