Yes, each time there’s a sequel to a game which busted the charts, this terrible fear creeps into our otherwise rock-solid gaming souls. Will it be as good as the first? Will they change it enough? Or will they change it too much? Gears of War 2 is perfectly suited for such fears. See below and tremble.[more]
On gamingverdict.com one can find a mildly distressing discussion about the possibility of Gears of War 2 not being so much as it should be. (Took me long enough to say it, didn’t it?) After all, this wouldn’t be the first long-awaited sequel to fizz away in the limbo space of gaming disappointments. The main problem with GOW 2 is: did they have enough time to make it right? One mustn’t forget that they also worked on Unreal Tournament 3 and that was no minor project at all. Are two years really enough time? (Gears of War 2 is scheduled to come to us in November this year, more or less exactly two years after the first title in the series.)
I mean, look at the Tom Clancy games. They’re quite good, most of them, but if you played one, then you’ll have no big surprises with many of the others. It seems there’s a name for this tendency in gaming creation – and it’s actually called the Tom Clancy syndrome.
Anyway, when you think about it, there aren’t many chances that GOW 2 will be light-years beyond the original. When it burst on our monitors in 2006, this game was quite a surprise for many of us. The veterans even began mumbling about Crusader No Regret or something like that, and they don’t do that unless there’s something of note happening.
But that will do for now, I was starting to ramble anyway. See? See what happens when you wait for a game?
