Bungie was urging us not to panic a few days ago, saying that the "Halo 3 Beta will be available in the US, Europe and elsewhere in the world". But that doesn't mean that everyone can now enlist for the beta; because not everyone can. The registration process did begin as planned on the Halo3.com website, but for the time being only North American players are accepted. And from them, only the ones meeting the following requirements will be able to participate in the beta, should Microsoft shine down upon them and select them:
Please note that in order to register for the beta, you must be 17 years or older and a resident of the 50 United States (includes District of Columbia) or Canada. If selected to participate, you must have access to the following:
- An Xbox 360 Pro console (includes hard-drive) or an Xbox 360 Core console with hard drive
- A valid Xbox Live Gold subscription
- A valid Microsoft. NET Passport account with a Xbox Live gamertag linked
Once again we remind you that the Halo 3 mutliplayer public beta program is scheduled to kick off in spring 2007.
Also as planned, the Halo 3 TV ad was aired and later made available on XBLM, and now you can also download it locally (screenshots here). Not only is it might impressive, and excruciatingly teasing, but it also reveals a thing or two about Halo 3's gameplay! Bungie previously hinted that, just because the trailer is fully-CG, it doesn't mean that it would not reproduce actual gameplay elements.
One such thing shown in the ad is a shield generating grenade-like device, which some already speculate will be assigned to the "X" button on the Xbox 360 controller. In the final sequence from the trailer, we can also see a bunch of Brutes, some of them carrying what appears to be the new Spike Rifle, 1UP figures.
Oh and one more thing: Bungie's latest update reveals that combat dialogue recording for Halo 3 has just begun at its Kirkland headquarters, and hints at a new weapon (other than the already-known Spartan Laser and Brute Spiker).
"Steve Scott, one of our amazing artists, showed me a new weapon today. No exaggeration to say that it is the single coolest graphical effect I have ever seen. He's busy trying to make the effect look cool from every angle - it looks amazing in third person, or even when it's in your face, but needs tuning in a first person view to look cooler, even though technically it looks the way it should. Sometimes artists have to exaggerate things to make them more obvious." It never ceases to amaze me how much hype and speculation can Halo 3 generate, without actually revealing much. I mean, do you have any idea what uber-cool new weapon they're talking about?!
