Activision started flexing its muscles with DOOM and Call of Duty and is now looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in its glory Conan days, especially after the merger with Vivendi Games.
But what is really impressive about the biggest publisher in the US is how it has managed to propel its favorite franchise to the jaw-dropping performance of more than 14 million copies sold in the biggest gaming market in the world- and in just 26 months!
Guitar Hero generated revenues of more than $1 billion in the US alone and has become the No. 1 title in units and dollars for calendar year 2007 (yeah, it surpassed even Halo 3...), becoming the the #1 best-selling video game of all time in a single calendar year (according to NPD Group). Moreover, Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock (the latest installment in the series) boosted digital music downloads, determining customers to buy more than 5 million songs in less than 11 weeks.
"Guitar Hero is one of the biggest brands and one of the most powerful distribution platforms in all of entertainment today," said Michael Griffith, President and Chief Executive Officer, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Guitar Hero's popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium."
Previously, Activision had reported that GH 3: Legends of Rock had reached 5 million units in less than 3 months.
