The latest financial update issued by Take-Two yesterday brings a lousy news for everyone (except for Nintendo, but that's a different story). Between stock percentages and other useless figures for us normal folks, the company announced the delay of Grand Theft Auto IV's release, from this October 16, to spring 2008 - at a date that's not only uncertain but, at this rate, also subject to a new "adjustment".
At fault for this delay, they say, are the technical difficulties haunting the development of GTA IV, not only on the PlayStation 3 as expected, but apparently on the Xbox 360 as well:
"Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms", said Strauss Zelnick (Chairman of Take-Two), adding at last night's conference that "There are technical challenges across the board on both PS3 and 360". Signs of trouble could be seen as early as last month's E3, where the PS3 version wasn't even shown as a trailer. For those of you interested, the Level Up blog has a more detailed analysis (or at least "informed speculations") about the reasons that led to the delay of GTA IV. Obviously, Take-Two's shares immediately dropped after the announcement, by 19%, and it's just as obvious that Microsoft and Sony will also have some trouble this autumn, after losing a colossal game for the sales of their Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles this holidays season.
And speaking of high-profile delays, Electronic Arts and Crytek announced yesterday the new release date for Crysis: November 16, 2007 (instead of the previous September 11)... Hmm... November 16? That sounds familiar, for some reason.
UPDATE: Blacksite: Area 51 was also delayed, until October 26 in Europe, and November 5 in North America.
