Noam Rimon, from Sony's official PlayStation blog, came with a surprise gift yesterday for all of you happy PS3 owners out there. If Christmas has put you in a altruistic mood, why not put that mood to good use and donate some of the processing capabilities of the Cell CPU to science?
All you have to do is simply maneuver the Xcross Media Bar until you reach the Network icon and then go to Folding@Home, where a small download will be available. The FAH client has been updated to version 1.3, and it now allows you to
play music from your console's hard drive while the CPU is crunching numbers. To activate the music player select Music and then a channel. The channels are automatically populated with songs you have stored on your HDD. If you want to be energy friendly (and reduce your bills) turn on the screen saver.
There are also some neat options which you can sift through in order to save time and money: you can program the PS3 to start working at its regular protein folding and unfolding after a certain amount of time of inactivity and you can also read real-time information about the status of the FAH project. Just don't shut down your console if you want the client to save humanity's fate...
