Duke Nukem for Xbox Live Arcade doesn't seem to have suffered Duke Nukem Forever’s delaying sickness, so we already have a solid review on it, one crafted by OXM. The conclusion was clear: with a a score of 8.5, this is the ultimate version of Duke Nukem 3D – and for now, we might add, the best Duke Nukem game out there.
In matters of content, Duken Nukem for XBLA has all the stuff from the original game, but also from the fourth Atomic Edition episode, all in a neat package of old-fashioned FPShooting. Because, despite the graphical revamp, it’s still old-fashioned – but that can also be part of its charm. Here are some excerpts from OXM’s analysis, explaining where are the strengths and weaknesses of this game:
"Like Doom before it, Duke Nukem 3D was a juggernaut in the adolescence of the first-person shooter. And also like Doom, it stands tall as a fantastic FPS on a system full of great shooters.”
“The only part of Duke's gameplay that fails the 2008 test is its reliance on annoying three and four-switch puzzles you must 'solve' to proceed.”
"Nevertheless, these niggles don't keep Duke from greatness. The one-liners and parodies are still funny, the level design is outstanding, then inventory items are genius and the weapon stash remains one of the genres most unique and fun to wield..."
Yes, we know, it’s not Duke Nukem Forever, but still...
