Again, the AGDC or Austin’s Game Developers Conference provides us with some insiders on the gaming industry and even with a game release semi-announcement. This time, the source of this info is one Harvey Smith, former Ion Storm and Midway designer. According to him and Gamasutra, Arkane Austin, his current employers, have some sort of “immersive first-person RPG” in the works.
Now, if this wasn’t Harvey Smith talking, such a news would be regarded with more than mild indifference. But this guy came from Ion Storm; he worked on grandiose titles such as Deus Ex and Thief: Deadly Shadows. And his current company has crafted some fine games, as well. Arx Fatalis had the most credible fantasy underworld in any game ever, and even the combat had you feeling you were in the middle of it all. That kind of felling was taken a notch further with Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, where melee first-person cutting, slashing, smashing, blocking and stabbing was really, really immersive.
So there you go. We may not know when this game is going to happen or whether it’s going to be swashbuckling fantasy or neural implanting cyberpunk, but it’s good news nonetheless.
