Well, well, well, look who finally decided to jump on the price-cutting wagon. While Microsoft officials kept saying "no, and no" in the eyes of the world, a price cut for the Xbox 360 console was being planned behind the public curtains for more than a while now. A price cut that will reportedly take place on August 12 in the US. The news is still not 100% official, but several retail chains have already broken the ice, revealing the new slashed prices for all three Xbox 360 SKUs: Core, Pro and Elite.
So, from the info put together by GameDaily BIZ, the Core model will get a $20 price cut and down to $279.99, the Pro model (with a 20 GB HDD) will get the most substantial price cut of $50 and down to $349.99, and the Elite model (with a 120 GB HDD) will get a $30 price cut and down to $449.99. This, as we were saying, beginning with August 12, 2007 - just in time for some major Xbox 360 releases such as Madden NFL 08, Bioshock, Stranglehold, Blue Dragon or Medal of Honor: Airborne, later this month.
Some in the industry were expecting the Core model to also get a $50 price cut, in order to speed up inventory depletion and to fulfil the rumour that Microsoft would soon discontinue the obsolete Core SKU. Poked for comments, Microsoft officials kept the same stubborn position:
"We have no announcements to make on pricing at this time. While price matters, content is king. And no other system is offering all the games people want to play this holiday at a better price than Xbox 360." Take your time, Microsoft dear, you still got 11 long days to go.
