Electronic Arts is no longer the largest publisher in the world, NPD announced. And it's not only because Activision merged with Vivendi/Blizzard. It's because titles like Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock or Call of Duty 4 sell like crazy.
NPD's estimates indicate that Activision took over the king's crown from EA in November, with 16.8 percent market share. The number represents a 7.9 percent increase compared to last year. The two blockbuster titles mentioned earlier have reached the first and second place respectively in terms of sales in the US, all platforms considered. Moreover, 5 Activision titles are among the top 10 best selling games last month.
Robert Kotick, Activision 's Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Activision since 1991, said: "the titles that we develop internally, like Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, continue to be very well received by the public. so we're in a very good position to keep the top spot until the end of the year. We're equally pleased to announce that we will upgrade our financial estimates for 2007 to a new record level, making this year the most profitable in our history".
Moreover, Activision reported an increase in net revenue for this fiscal year: from the previously announced $2.3 billion to $2.45 billion in March 2008 (the end of FY 2007-2008). Only for this last semester Activision reported revenues of $1.375 billion.
