Okay, I must admit that it's a rumour spreaded as a result of the enormous amount of hype, and a recent incursion on the UK branch of Xbox.com. Shortly put, in a page header promoting content downloads for Marketplace, there was a graphic which clearly read "Gears of War Demo" alongside the already released games Frogger, Pac-Man, and Joust. What's more, on the page for game demos on Marketplace, there is clearly a picture of Gears of War. So, is it real, or it's too good to be true? Well, the official answer camed in no time.
During his recent posting on Gears of War forums, Mark Rein was quite categorical. He said:
"There is no Gears demo and there won't be before launch. I suspect that is a generic header with the Gears image in it. There aren't any plans at the moment to make a demo of Gears. We have other things we're going to be working on as soon as Gears has gone gold but I can not elaborate on them at this point in time."
Can we say that this matter is to be concluded in such fashion? It wouldn't be the first time when producers, caught up making childish mistakes (like hazardous but true declarations), tried to sweep away the evidence, by denying any of the speculations. Only time will tell.
